WHEELS

They are like shining wings..sparkling jewels..the ultimate expression of an automobile...emotions and impressions are focused on them..their light alloy material is seductive..WHEELS are the finest feature of any car.

Wheel is the part that enables efficient movement on a surface where there is a force pressing it to the surface.

CONSTRUCTION

  • Rim       -- It is the outer edge of the wheel which encases the disc and the hub.It is designed to hold tire in position.
  • Hub       -- It is the center of a wheel and houses a bearing and the brake disc.
  • Spokes -- these are the radiating outwards from the hub to the rim. They help in weight reduction, aerodynamics and temperature regulation.

The production process begins with fully automatic low pressure casting machines where aluminium alloy (eg. Al-10Si-0.6Cu) is made into an initial shape and a billet is forged using hot forging. Then "Flow Forming" is done in which re-heated wheel is spun and pressed by simultaneous spinning contours giving a proper shape to the wheel. It is then machined to proper dimensions.Heat treatment is done on wheels to give the aluminium structure required strength. Now de-burring is done and bolt holes, valve holes, and the center bore are so drilled in an automatic CNC machine. Then testing is done using infrared testing machines, eddy current testing etc. for any cracks or holes. Now the forged spokes and flow formed rims are fastened together by using titanium bolts. Now the wheel is about to be ready to roll after going through a series of high performance testing machines which test the wheels in extreme conditions so that the quality is uncompromised.

RIM NOMENCLATURE

A) Wheel: Wheel is generally composed of rim and disc.
B) Rim: This is a part where the tire is installed.
C) Disc: This is a part of the rim where it is fixed to the axle hub.
D) Offset: This is a distance between wheel mounting surface where it is bolted to hub and the centerline of rim.
E) Flange: The flange is a part of rim which holds the both beads of the tire.
F) Bead Seat: Bead seat comes in contact with the bead face and is a part of rim which holds the tire in a radial direction.
G) Hump: It is bump what was put on the bead seat for the bead to prevent the tire from sliding off the rim while the vehicle is moving.
H) Well: This is a part of rim with depth and width to facilitate tire mounting and removal from the rim.
